Numbers 7:42 – chapter 8 Click here to read
The process of setting the Levites apart for special service continues, with each of the tribes contributing to the ceremonial requirements.
The contributions include grain offerings as well as animals for both sin offerings and fellowship offerings. They also include plates, bowls and dishes that will be used in the ceremony, as well as incense.
It’s worth noting that water is used like one of our current modes of baptism. “To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing on them…”
God again reminds Moses that the Levites are set apart from other Israelites for special service and belong to God.
While this set-apartness goes beyond what is true of other Israelites, it is not all that different: The chosen people have been set apart for special service and belong to God. As Christians, we believe that we have been grafted in to the line of the chosen people. We are chosen, not for special privilege, but for special service. We belong to God and are to show him to the world.
We, in fact, are a priesthood, set apart and cleansed through the water of baptism to serve God and his creation.
