Christ’s love is forever
Christmas Day
Deuteronomy 32:10-47 Read it here
It feels odd to be reading from Deuteronomy on Christmas Day, but if we accept that Jesus is the center point of all scripture, even this is preparation for his birth at Bethlehem.
Jesus is the pivot on which history rests. He is where all things meet—the hopes and fears of all the years.
Moses, in this song, speaks of Israel as a person. The man is the people, and the people are the man. Jesus, too, is identified not just as a person, but is truly representative of all people.
In the words of God through Moses in verse 39 we also hear the assurance of Christ. “See now that I myself am he! There is no God besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand.”
The first verses of today’s reading are a beautiful statement of the world God wants to give to his child, Israel, and to us. As you think upon the birth of Jesus today, remember these words describe the world he was born to usher in:
In a desert land he found him,
in a barren and howling waste.
He shielded him and cared for him;
he guarded him as the apple of his eye,
like an eagle that stirs up its nest
and hovers over its young,
that spreads its wings to catch them
and carries them aloft.
Merry Christmas!
Wednesday meditation
Proverbs 15:30
Light in a messenger’s eyes brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.
Prayer focus
Lord, remind us that, however much we appreciate your gift at Christmas, that it was neither the beginning nor the end of your love. You have loved us since you set out to create us and will love us forever.
