Testimony
John 5:16 – 6:24
Today’s reading has a lot about who Jesus is and how we can be sure the testimony about him is true.
When the Jewish leaders persecute him for claiming to be the son of God, he doubles down on the claim: “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.”
The fact that God has entrusted all judgment to Jesus is good news indeed, but with a catch. While God knows us intimately from having created us, Jesus knows us even better from having been one of us.
That is good news, knowing we will be judged by someone who truly understands and has even experienced human frailty and weakness. The catch is that, since he lived as a man and remained sinless, he knows what our potential is and can recognize when we fail to reach it.
Thursday meditation
Proverbs 21:14-16
A gift given in secret soothes anger, and a bribe concealed in the cloak pacifies great wrath.
When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.
Whoever strays from the path of prudence comes to rest in the company of the dead.
Prayer focus
Lord, please judge us with compassion.
