Consolidation
1 Kings Chapter 2
David’s death is recorded with surprisingly little fanfare, and Solomon goes about the business of consolidating his hold on the kingdom.
His famous wisdom is on display as he does. He starts out by treating some of his former opponents with compassion, but doesn’t hold back from a firm and lethal response when they cross him.
Yesterday we read that Solomon spared the life of Adonijah in spite of his attempt to take the throne. Today, though, when it looks like he’s laying the groundwork for a second attempt Solomon orders his death.
Even with Joab, who had conspired against him, Solomon takes care to show that Joab also has other sins to pay for and was previously guilty of murder. His death not only protects Solomon’s throne, but also brings the earlier matter to justice.
Tuesday meditation
Proverbs 22:17-21
Pay attention and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.
So that your trust may be in the Lord, I teach you today, even you.
Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge, teaching you to be honest and to speak the truth, so that you bring back truthful reports to those you serve?
Prayer focus
God, may we temper justice with compassion.
