1 Kings Chapters 21-22
Despite King Jehoshaphat of Judah being a good and righteous king, he is on good terms with the unrighteous King Ahab of Israel.
During a state visit, Ahab asks for Jehoshaphat’s help in reclaiming a city that had been taken by the Arameans. Jehoshaphat, unlike Ahab, wants the wisdom of the effort confirmed by a prophet before agreeing.
As is usual, Ahab has a large number of royal “prophets” who are quick to confirm whatever he wants them to. Jehoshaphat is less easily convinced and asks if there is a prophet of the Lord who can be consulted.
Ahab grudgingly admits there is one, Micaiah, whom he dislikes for consistently disagreeing with him.
While Micaiah knows the military adventure will not end well, he initially encourages Ahab to pursue it, believing it is God’s will that Ahab go to his death in the effort.
Ahab tries to avoid his fate by going into battle in disguise. In spite of not being recognized as the king, he dies anyway from a random arrow.

Saturday meditation

Proverbs 24:1-2
Do not envy the wicked, do not desire their company; for their hearts plot violence, and their lips talk about making trouble.

Prayer focus
Lord, free us from the foolishness of trying to avoid doing your will.
