The Shema

I was asked about the prayer I mentioned in the sermon Sunday, Dec. 15, the Shema.

It’s a traditional Jewish prayer that is featured several times in The Chosen TV series, and is partially based on that Sunday’s scripture text.

Here is the prayer as I quoted it, which I got from Season 1, Episode 3 of the show. I’ve found several different versions of the prayer which vary in length; this is a fairly short version but contains text from all three verses of the prayer.

Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God. The Lord is one.

You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, all your soul, and all your might.

And it shall come to pass, if you surely listen to the commandments I command you today, that you may gather in your grain, your wine, and your oil, and you will eat, and you will be satisfied.

I am the Lord your God who led you from the land of Egypt to be a God to you.

I am the Lord your God. Amen.

It is based on three scripture texts: Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Deuteronomy 11:13-21 and Numbers 15:37-41.
